Getting Started with zinguist
What is zinguist?
zinguist is a language learning app that helps you memorise phrases recorded by native speakers. You learn by listening, repeating, and practising recall — and the app tracks your progress over time.
Signing in
- Open the app
- Enter your email address and password
- Tick the box to confirm you've read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy
- Tap Sign In
Tapping Terms and Conditions or Privacy Policy opens them inside the app, so you can read them and close the browser without losing anything you've typed. If you tap Sign In before ticking the box, the screen tells you what's missing rather than doing nothing.
Migrating from the old zinguist? Sign in once with your existing email and password from the old app — your account will be migrated automatically. The Forgot password? link is only for accounts already on the new app, so use sign-in first.
New account created by an admin? You'll get a welcome email with a temporary password. Enter your email and that temporary password on the sign-in screen, then tap Sign In. Since it's your first sign-in, you'll be taken straight to a Set Your Password screen instead of the home screen — choose the password you'll use from now on and you're in. You won't need the temporary password again after this.
If you've forgotten your password (and you've already signed in to the new app at least once), tap the Forgot password? link on the sign-in screen to reset it. You'll be emailed a verification code; enter it along with your new password.
Password requirements: at least 12 characters, including an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, and a number.
Getting activated
When you sign in for the first time, you may see a waiting screen. This is normal — an admin needs to activate your account and set the language you'll be learning before you can start using the app.
Once an admin has activated you, you'll be taken to the home screen the next time you open the app.
Onboarding
The first time you open the app after being activated, you'll see a short onboarding walkthrough explaining how the course works: coaching, native speaker practice, and your daily exercises. You'll also enter your first and last name, then answer a couple of optional questions for your coach. Tap through each screen and tap Finish on the last one to get started. You'll only see this once.
The home screen
After signing in, where you land depends on your role:
- Learners (and native speakers who are also learning) land on the Progress tab. This is the learner home screen with your daily activities and learning stats.
- Native speakers only (teaching, not learning) land on the NSP tab. See the Native Speaker Guide.
Progress tab (learners)
At the top, you'll see a personalised greeting with your name and the language you're learning. Once you've memorised any phrases, the greeting also shows how many.
Daily Activities
Cards help you stay on track each day:
- Book a session / upcoming session: if scheduling is enabled for you, book a native speaker or open your next live session. You can change a booking in the app until 24 hours before it starts.
- Daily Recall — shows how many phrases are ready for you to review. Tap to start your daily recall challenge.
- Continue Listening — shows how many minutes of listening you've logged today. Tap to log more.
- Recommended Podcasts — appears when the language you are learning has podcasts. Tap to see curated shows and episodes for it. Tapping a row opens the podcast link.
- Learn a New Phrase — tap to start learning a new phrase that's been assigned to you.
Your Progress
If you're on an 8-week course, a Phrase learning goals chart compares your current phrase total against the weekly targets for your enrollment. Once you've started course videos, a Course Videos card shows how many you've watched.
Your profile
Tap the profile icon in the top corner of the home screen to open your profile.
From here you can:
- Update your name — tap your name to edit it
- Email: the address you sign in with. Tap it to change it. Enter the new address and your current password. A code is sent to the new inbox. Your current address keeps working until you enter that code. On your other devices, sign in with the new address.
- I speak — see or change the language you speak natively
- Timezone: see or change the timezone used in session emails. Update it if you move country or go on holiday. While it is not set, the app asks you to confirm the timezone from your device. You can close that and set it later here.
- I am learning — see the language you're learning. Your admin sets it when they enrol you, and switches it by starting a new enrollment for you in a different language. If you see a viewing-language chip elsewhere in the app, it does not change this row.
- User ID — tap to copy (useful if you need to share it with an admin)
- App version — tap to copy
- Download my data — under Your data, save a copy of your personal data
- Delete account — permanently delete your account and your data
- Contact us — get in touch with the zinguist team
- Privacy policy — read the privacy policy
Signing out
- Tap the profile icon to open your profile
- Tap Sign out in the top right corner
Offline use
You can download phrase recordings to your device so you can listen to them without an internet connection. See the learner guide for details on how to download and manage offline recordings.
When you're offline, a banner appears at the top of the screen. Some features may be limited until you're back online, but you can still listen to any recordings you've downloaded.
Course videos
If course videos are enabled on your account, open the Courses tab to watch videos. When a quiz is ready, a Take quiz card on the Progress tab takes you to it. Full instructions are in the learner guide.
Updating the app
If a new version is on the App Store or Google Play, a small orange dot appears on the Profile icon in the header. On the Progress tab, a line at the bottom of the screen also points you to the store. Open Profile and tap Update on the App Store or Update on Google Play.
If you already have the latest store version, Profile may still show Update app when a smaller in-app update is ready. Tap it to apply that update.
Automatic phone updates still work if you have them on. The in-app reminder is only there if you would otherwise miss a store release.
